when the market is as flooded as it is with HOF posters doesnt it make sense to utilise every angle possible to ensure at least some sales for yourself at the back end? There IS a balance that can be struck between creating something acceptable to your own sensibilities and something that will make creating it worth your while.
That's the attitude you should approach every poster with
Ok, for the 100,000th time and once more for the noobz...Many bands in the metal scene cultivate a specific image. The metal scene isn't the same as indy rock or many other types of music. The fans of metal bands generally speaking are very fickle. They don’t know that the band didn’t approve that image. So, they may look at it and wonder WTF is going on with HOF. They may be turned off. HOF are not one of the “ironic” metal bands so popular these days. They are as real and true as it gets. Their athstetic is what it is for a reason. Look at their merch. Do you see a lot of cute funny or ironic stuff? No.
I am not in HOF. I can’t speak for them personally as a band. But I can speak from almost 20 years of creating art for metal bands. I don’t know much about many things but I know a thing or two about the scene. I know how the scene works. I know how it thinks. I know pretty well what works and what doesn’t. I even know what kind of “funny and irreverent” stuff does work.
If you want to fuck around and make funny irreverent posters I‘d stay away from doing metal posters. You could be causing problems you have no idea about. You really need to understand the rules before you decide to break them.
Well from that angle I guess it is disrespectful.
Someone call Jay Vollmar. He'll show everyone how its done.
This sucks because I want to make fun of Mike for being all aggro serious arbiter of the metal scene, but he's making sense so I'm torn.
Thank you for asking actual questions instead of just bashing. :-D
ill do my best to answer them well.
ok here we go-
Do you think its fair or even good business sense to provide the band with posters you obviously know dont really fit their demographic or image thus depriving them of potential sales at that particular show, not to mention the hassle of carting them away at the end of the night?
I disagree with your first assertion, we know A LOT of the kids who make up the crowds at MOJO13 shows, and this poster is RIGHT up their alley. Therefore we will not be depriving them of potential sales.
How do you think this approach reflects on your design services in terms of getting future work not just from HOF but from other bands?
Not worried at ALL/
I think that if a band is concerned solely with sticking to the same mantra that has been applied to them time and time again they have bigger issues then "should we get those nodivision guys to make us a poster". Poster art, or even art in general doesn't need to be safe or familiar or obvious to be effective. Lots and lots and lots of bands come to us for work and after meeting lots and lots and lots of band guys & gals I have to say, most of them enjoy the posters that shake things up/ I know we do.
Why would you go to the trouble of creating an image, either screenprinting yourself or paying out of pocket to have them printed when there is very little potential (given the final result) to recoup costs and labour due to not being easy to sell to fans of the band?
We draw and print our own posters because we love to draw & print posters.
Period. We also work (our asses off) at Design Firms / Studios making so that we can afford to turn any, ANY idea we have into a real life poster without worrying about selling any of them. however, we happen to have ongoing deals with merchants, shop & gallery owners which ensure that we at least break even (usually anyways). It comes down to this: we dont make our living drawing & printing posters- its just how we get our kicks.
last but not least. I was just answering questions quickly & informally before this post, i apologize if I seemed obnoxious to you. I wasn't trying to push buttons, I just wanted to go home as I was still at my desk at work...
thanks for reading. No hard feelings I hope.
