what does high on fire think of these 100 pages?
DIED YOUNG, STAYED NERDY!
ND: When you make a poster for a band, you are not only speaking for a band, but you are speaking in their voice to the public. So this poster not only fails on the inappropriateness-of-imagery category (if imagery is communication, then you were speaking in the wrong language), but the comment on the bottom could be construed by a viewer as coming from the band, not you. If a Nike print ad said "we hate black people", I think most people would rightfully conclude that Nike is making that statement, not Wieden and Kennedy Advertising, or whoever made the ad. Your job as an ad-maker is to responsibly communicate your client to an audience. There is a lot of talk about a "metal look" in this thread, and I think it's valid. But let's remember the other side of the coin - what if this poster got someone who had never heard of High on Fire to go to the show? Would it be a fair representation of what they're about to hear? I don't think so. Irony only works when a brand/client is so well known that the majority of the people are in on the joke AND if irony is appropriate for the client (example: I worked in a used CD store for 5-6 years, and SUGAR's "File Under Easy Listening" was ALWAYS misfiled in the Easy Listening section. It is a beautiful looking album - it is an unsuccessful joke) As people have said, irony and metal don't go together too well.
You don't get to decide if your poster is good. I don't even think the band necessarily gets to decide either - I personally question the concept of "if the band likes it then it must be good" because that assumes the band members have a unified vision and know what they're about visually - not every band is capable of that (examples: latter-day Maiden album art; most Paul Westerberg posters on this site are better looking than any Paul Westerberg album art, etc etc). I think what determines if a poster has succeeded or failed is what the majority thinks. Obviously, the internet, or this site, doesn't represent a majority anything. But it should give you pause about the design decisions you've made. It is not a bad poster, it is just extremely not... right.
I totally called NODIVISION an asshole.

And you are TOTALLY cool for doing it. Congratulations!
I just woke up, and now have 15 pages to read.....
So....really...why are there cupcakes, birdies, stars, flowers and such in the flames and smoke?
