Art Chantry left, EMEK hasn't been seen for a long time, same for Marty from Altimage. Downing Creek plus misstress are the latest to leave.
This site has now more the 6000 posters. That is quite a feat for such a short time. It has more the 1100 idiots like me that signed up to gigposters.com. At any time you'll see dozens of guests roaming this site. That is pretty impressive and shows that there is a need and demand for a site like gigposters.com
I can completely understand that some of you/us get bored with the recurring debate about art versus design, or concept versus pretty pictures. However I think that these are interesting debates if you ignore the background noise and even though we are sometimes beating a dead horse. Some of them are plainly uninteresting for me personally and I just ignore them
I can understand the frustration with the slagging, critiquing and other crap that goes on in the forums and comment sections.
However, that comes with the territory of an internet forum. You can either :
1. live with it and only particpate when you feel it will be of benefit to you
2. convince Clay/Kendra to start administrating the forums and basically use censorship
3. leave the whole lot and go back to making posters
I hope people either go with 1 or start asking Clay to implement 2
At one point DC mentions that he wants to set up a forum on his site. Does DC really think he can avoid the 'problems' that we have here? Not if it will be an open forum. Perhaps if DC becomes administrator and screens every message.
A few months ago I mentioned how pleased I was that one could 'see' Emek, Ucle Charlie, Marty, Art and many more roaming this site. Are these days over? I hope not.
Some of you were talking about a conference or get-together. Do you think that 1100 people at a conference can all get along and have (in your opinion) useful discussions. Unlikely. People form groups according to their beliefs, interests, profession etcetera when they are in a big crowd. This is a big crowd with lots of different opinions, backgrounds and its fair share of assholes, ignorant boobs and egotrippers. Ignore those you deem uninteresting and focus on the others.
At the end of the day we have a site here that could contain the largest amount of gigposters on the web EVER. It would be a great tool for research, discussion and inspiration.
I hope that Art changes his mind and allows his 'children' to be posted here. I hope that DC and his PM will keep posting their work here even though they may decide to not participate in these forums. I hope that Emek puts in a blurb once in while on these boards. I hope Marty will share his experience when it comes to promotion and running a business.
This site has too much potential to ignore. Yes, there are frustrations but ignore them. Use this site for its poster database, particpate only in the discussions you find helpful, and use the ICQ/profiles to group together with those persons that you can have a good discussion with.
Look some discussions are difficult to have on a forum where you have 1100 potential speakers. I would love to have a moderated 'chat' or discussion between (example!) DC, Vibe, Art, Uncle Charlie, Hampton about art versus design. I would love to see the same with others when it comes to the professional, commercial or business side of doing posters. Perhaps Clay can figure out a way to limit the particpants to a previously selected group. These are then in addition to the forums. Perhaps DC can have these discussion via email with others that he deems interesting and have Clay post the 'results' on the website.
I dunno, perhaps this long email doesnt make any sense but this is a community with all the warts included. Running away completely would be a shame in my opinion.
