Hey guys, what happened to the idea of coming together a doing a poster? All of you have such incredible talent, do you realize what a powerful statement that would be?

I hate to say it, but only a few of the people on here could actually make a powerful statement together...most of these dudes are just hacks who are ripping off early-1990's-Kozik or the stuck-in-a-rut-for-how-many-years-now-Coop. I'm glad people aren't banding together....it would be a sad display of lack of originality.

This is not for sure yet but we might try to put together a calendar, with a different designer for each month. The proceeds would go to pay for hosting renewal for the lumbering hulk that is the gigposters database.

I think we kinda missed the boat for 2002 (since I just thought of this last week... we'd only have 3 weeks to put it together!) maybe next year... plus we need to find a deal on printing.

the calendar idea may seem like a good idea, but you'll run into copyright violations - not on the artwork, but on the artists names. technically, when we create a poster, it is a piece of advertising commissioned by the artist through the promoter (i know most posters don't follow this route, but bear with me. i'm talking how the business/legal world sees it). therefore when we sell posters after the show, we are selling an historical document - an artifact - and that is tecnically not controlled. we don't pay a royalty to the munsters when we sell an old lunchbox. similarly we don't pay a usage royalty when we re-sell an old poster. however, if you put this poster on a t-shirt, you are creating a product for sale from the ouset, and you owe the band a royalty because they control their legal name. and to be honest you'll sell a lot more t-shirts with nirvana on it than you would with the woggles. so the name is the main sales point - even on our old posters. at one point, kozik's biggest selling poster said soundgarden on it. it's business. the problem lies is usage on the bands name. you don't really need it to do a concert poster (and then sell after the fact, a huge legal loop hole we exploit and lotsa bands have tried to close up)), but you definitely do need it if your going to create product for intended commercial sale. that is where a calendar falls. you'd have to give it away in order to avoid liability. can you afford that?
