    Lightbulb Notable Screenprinting Poster Artists?

I'm doing an essay on Screenprinting for my art dissertation, here is my general plan:

Introduction to the origins of Silk/Screenprinting,
Research into a Screenprinting poster artist,
Production of my Screenprinted movie poster (produced with the style from my research in mind.)

This is about as straight-forward as I can make this essay, however I'm having trouble finding a good artist to research! There are so many great posters I'd like to work from, however I wouldn't have much to write about many of the artists. Is there any big artists from the past 60 years that stand out?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Text referencing would be great for this essay. I presume that a famous artist/ movement would have a lot more text analysis from books.

I'd be grateful for any help. Merry Christmas!

Look at the Gigposters Books that Clay has done. Available at most major bookstores Im sure. Vol 1 & 2 have a really great selection of some of the best current poster artists. Good luck!

this isn't going to be in the christmas spirit, but it's the day before christmas and i'm at work so here it goes...go do the research yourself. find multiple artists/designers that you like the work of. research into each of them and find out which one has a compelling story or something unique that you are interested in.

don't go online and say please give me an artist and all the research too. if this is really a dissertation you got to do some work to learn something. and that's the whole point: to learn something that will improve you. not just to regurgitate some facts to satisfy the requirement and then move onto the next one. you have to do the work. get something out of it.

    kids today.

take some screenprinted posters that are similar to what you want to do and technically challenging to you and reverse-engineer them. either from a design or a production stand point. maybe then try to reproduce the effect/style. then see if you can get a hold of the artist and talk to them about their process. see if the assumptions that you made in how they did their work is correct. maybe even visit their studio for an interview.

keep in mind that the person that screenprints the poster might not be the same person that prints it (or does the separations for it).

    Agreed with Mike.

Do your own work, lazy fucker. Part of the fun is discovering who you're interested in, not who others like.

That's the refreshing part about gigposters for the most part. Less talk. More Art.

I'm with the Mikes. Pick someone's work you like (there's 136,000 here to pick from)

Ok, I'm more interested in Blondie's teacher than some essay. Did he drive her to Pron?

Hey there. I don't think the screen printing world produces what you are looking for if you are doing an actual dissertation (phd) for art on Screen printing and rock posters. Theory and analysis aren't often defined in this scene, so doing the work yourself is a bigger opportunity in writing than you think. You will not find books on certain artists and their artistic contributions in terms of theory at all (correct me if I'm wrong people). You'll have to construct that yourself. They may exist from the perspective of design theory.
