Default Paying gig vs. Non paying double standard

Everyone is always up in arms about the non paying gigs.

A festival offers you to make a poster for a band or performer. You must send off 20 or so copies to the festival organizers. Your payment is 2 tickets to the festival which you won't use because it's on the other side of the country. Permission to sell the posters after the festival on your web site or flatstock is not automatically granted by the festival organizers or artist. You must create extra leg work to "approve" your poster and even then it's not guaranteed the performer will approve it.

Depends who they are I guess.

...the person feeling your nuts, I mean. Not the band.

If value of "payment" ($, goods received, relationships built or other intangibles) >= value of investment (time, effort, materials, sales potential, etc) then do it. Otherwise don't, or ask for more. Value is based on your perception, not face value (ex. those $100 tickets are worth $0 to you).

Paying gigs are gigs where I make enough money to cover expenses and don't feel like I'm being exploited. Everything else falls under non-paying gigs, irregardless of whether or not something was exchanged for services.
