    Default numbered series posters questions

I notice that some gig poster artists number and sign their posters.

Most of the time there is a first number that is the print number, and then a second number that is how many were in the edition. Like 67/200
Has anyone ever just put the first number and not the second? So just 67 That way if they wanted to add to the edition later if one of their prints was really popular, they could just do print 201 through 400?

I am just wondering if anyone has ever seen posters done that way.
Please don't bite my head off. I am new to this and was having a discussion with another artist, and wanted to get your opinion.
    Thanks,
    Jim

doing it that way would screw the first 200 buyers. it would be better if you did a second edition, it would be best to move on.

You have to write the second number so people know how many there are. Otherwise, numbering would only indicate the order in which you numbered that print.

Editions are supposed to be closed unless explicitly announced. In the case of an open edition, you don't number at all.

The rules and concepts around signing and numbering 'Limited' Edition prints - Limited meaning there were only x number produced - can be found in many books and articles on here or the interwebz.

Those rules have been applied in a general way to the modern rock poster movement in an effort to differentiate the posters made by the artists from mass produced glossy offset posters of pop stars produced in the thousands and sold at Walmart.

Some people take them more seriously than others, and some pick up bits and pieces of the rules as they see fit, which in turn starts stupid arguments about the relative validity of one print over another, due to the marking, the lack of marking, or the mixed up marking of the print.

Or you could not sign & number.

We certainly don't worry with it unless a customer requests it.

Personally, I think it's a vital part of the screen-printing process. It works as a signifier of the "limited" nature of the print. It's like the texture of the ink, the *tiny* bit of off-registration, etc. I like it.
