dear folks out there in rock geek world. these forums are ridiculous. i suggest you all move on to something important. this is language, not art. GRAPHIC DESIGN IS NOT ART! and also, rock posters are insubstantial and ultimayely meaningless ditties. have you ever noticed that they have no inherant meaning outside of "looking cool"? ROCK POSTERS ARE MEANINGLESS CRAP! THEY ARE NOT ART! WE ARE ALL HACKS!

Art Chantry's book, Instant Litter, makes repeated references to designers as artists. So many, in fact, that it's pointless to even quote them specifically. The images are also called "artwork". It's a dangerous game trying to define what art is and isn't, and where advertising and design start and art stops. I will also point out that our Mr. Chantry had to seek out or be led to this forum, register himself like the rest of us hacks, and then post his philosophy for all to see (and hopefully praise). Well done.

Wow. Im very impressed with the last post by 5rock (nice posters, too!). His art is clearly more in the 'design theory' slant, and he still has the guts to call it when he sees it, regarding Art Chantry. I hadnt commented on this before, cause I thought it was all so stupid, but I have to say 5rock is correct. When Chantry was here a while back, lots of folks got upset. Chantry also gave Clay (and the GIGPOSTERS staff) a days worth of headaches...at least thats how it looked from here. I know many folks who have worked with Chantry, and ALL of them have had 'stories' to tell, so I wasnt suprised at Chantry's behaviour when he came on here: it just confirmed what Ive heard. You guys just have to ignore that stuff. Its his schtick. COOP does devil girls. Chantry acts like 'that'. Its pretty gimmicky.
I own a couple of the Chantry books, and I agree with 5rock...and there are more contradictions of himself out there...just read those books, then listen to the stuff he spouted out here, a while back. He referred to many of the people on this site..all of them, in fact...as ignorant idiots, and he said that hed never come back, because its a waste of his precious time. Yet, when the following thread came up recently, ol' Art was right there, ready to post: http://www.gigposters.com/phpBB/view...forum=1&38 And he shouldve been right there. His participation actually helped answer some of the questions in the thread. So, dont play holier than thou with the people on this site. I agree with 5rock: NO one can say where art stops and 'hack' work begins. There are 6 billion humans on this planet, and any one who steps up to make a blanket statement about what art 'is' or 'isnt' can get bent, for all I care. I dont care how long youve been 'in the business'. For every opinion you have, theres someone else older than you, better than you, and with more experience than you who has the opposite view. If everyone on this site can just remember that. Your opinion is not LAW. Its a simple concept...and for the life of me, I cant understand how some people cant see that. I guess, in a way, the whole thing with Art Chantry on GIGPOSTERS recently did serve a purpose for me. The Chantry posters I owned (not many, but I did have a few) have all been sold off on EBAY (I got screwed there,too!) and I wont buy Chantry anymore. I like the art, but with this site, you can now hear the artist up close. It gets hard for me to seperate the artist from his work. Chantry just aint my kinda guy, anymore. Thats just my opinion. It shows the power of these boards. It works the other way, too. Seeing posts from people like Methane Studios, Pete Cardoso, and Drwoning Creek actually pushed me to give their art a second look. It sounds really weird, but think about it. If I know you, and youre really a straight person to me, Ill be more apt to WANT to see your vision. Im getting into the 5rock stuff right now!

This is the exact type of interaction that makes me glad I found this site. It can be lonely business doing this type of work. Many of us are knee deep in the advertising world (or other vocations) 50hrs a week to support our creative and dare I say artistic ventures. It is invaluable to me to be able to consult with and learn from some my biggest influences in this setting. As I write this post, BLT is logged on and available to give advice on screening... and the BLT press is responsible for creating some of the most amazing posters around... ever.

will the real art chantry please stand up?
i dunno about the rest of but this post seems to be started by someone pretending to be a.c. ... unless art has 2 diffrent user names and profiles.. art chantry design and simply : art chantry.. but i'm new here so what do i know? all i know is someone with the user name art chantry gave me his email address to resolve a dispute and i don't think it's the same person as this art chantry design person... i mean i THINK i talked to the real art chantry but this art chantry is saying he is the only art chantry.. whoo this is confusing.. <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: seripop on 2002-03-04 10:45 ]</font>
