This has happened to me several times doing freelance work. The "client" would settle for nothing other than an exact replica of the giant turd they envisioned in their little pea brain. So I gave them a turd and they loved it. I got paid but got nothing for my resume.

Then I stopped doing work for people who didn't let me have 80% of the creative control over their project. It's worked out well ever since.
