So I re-did the text in hand drawn... (and fixed the date) ... kept it simple.. seems pretty similar...
any advice? typography and layout of that is one of my weak points in design...

i'd go with the first one (with the text straight across the bottom). i like the small amount of negative space it leaves.

hand lettering the bottom definitely makes this a lot cooler.
