Photoshop question

Hope this is the right place for this, if not please move.

I'm basically stuck on how to achieve something that i'm sure must be relatively simple.

If i do some hand lettering in black, and scan it in, what's the best way to change the colour of it to something specific without using the paint bucket?

I don't want to use the paint bucket since the lines are hand drawn it doesn't fill accurately enough and the integrity of the outer lines are compromised.

What i would do if i had white lettering on a black background is turn the layer property to 'multiply' and fill the colour on another layer underneath.

I guess i'm looking for way to do this with black, if that makes sense.

Place in Illustrator or InDesign, use the hand tool and select your color.

01. You have your black lettering on one layer.
02. Create a new layer, and fill it with the color you want the text to be. Put it above the other layer.
03. Choose "Screen" from the layer style menu or whatever it's called.
04. Merge the layers.
05. Cash the checks.

bitmap it if its not solid black, change back to greyscale, change to cmyk. lock layer.. then control (apple) backspace for foreground colour

I usually go greyscale then back to RGB and use the Gradient Map. But Denny's way seems the easiest.

I'd make it greyscale then duotone (but use the monotone option, so you can pick just one color)... then create CMYK again after picking the right color.

You can do this same thing with the Color Overlay feature on the layer with the black lettering on it.

Then create a blank layer above it and merge the layers.

Then cash the checks.

you can also do this by leaving it B/W then going into the channels, option click your black channel. Copy this into a new layer. Change your shit to RGB, fill said layer with color (with lock trans pixels set to yes).
