    Default "work for hire"

i've been searching - what's the term for the opposite of work for hire? "freelance" status?

the opposite would be 'licensing'. usually in 'work for hire' they get the copyright, the intellectual property. If you 'license' the image you keep the copyright and IP and they pay you to use it for a set time/thing etc.

This is a great post and makes me think of where I can fit in. I do a little bit of everything mentioned here and I guess I have to find my competitive advantage.

Good post! I plan to move into this stuff after I’m done with school, as most of it is time consuming. It’s a great post to reference back to. My blog needs more time to gain in popularity anyway.

Personally, I'd just like to get into more freelance illustration and design of any sort... gigposters, cd artwork, shirts, etc. I've done a bit here and there over the years for random bands like The Queers, Lollipop factory, and a few others, but my goal this year is to do a lot more of it than I have been. I like doing this sort of work as opposed to your average "graphic design" because it generally allows a lot more creative freedom, plus it's a lot more fun than putting together a pamphlet for new loan rates for Wachovia or some bullshit like that. So we'll see how it goes, and in the meantime I'm just trying to beef up my portfolio and learn what I can about the "business" aspect of it.
