    Default certificate of liability?

I just read an email from a client i've done freelance work for. she says she's in the midst of a worker's comp audit and is "attempting to collect certificates of liability and worker's comp from firms I did business with."

    so like,

    1. what the hell are those - just forms proving I have insurance?

    and

    2. do i need to bother with this? it seems to apply to a different sort of contractor, no?

it just seems like bullshit paperwork i'd rather not deal with if i don't have to. anybody?

    As a former HR Manager...wow.

She probably has to send a request (per the audit) to all parties for whom she's contracted work, but you are not a bonded and possibly not a licensed firm, correct? There is really no reason for you to be either.

I mean, that's kooky. I used to do Worker's Comp stuff and went through a few kinds of audits, and to my recollection we never required nor needed proof of certificates of liability from our contractors and freelancers. We had those certificates and WC policies for our employees, and expected contractors and freelance workers to carry their own insurance.

So, just tell her that you don't have those as you have not needed them for your business to date.

    End of.

If you don't have liability insurance, then you can't give her what she wants.

Seriously, she just has to ask all independent contractors, some will have have one and some won't. It's nothing that you need to worry about if you don't have one, it's a list that she needs to tally in terms of Contractor X has one: Yes / No.
