I'm packing my bags to go to New Zealand next year, permanent like. So this Poster deal question's been featuring in ma head too lately. Over here I've been fortunate enough to work closely with some venues and promoters (e.g. Reitschule Bern dachstock reitschule bern or RAUBFISH - RAUBFISH) They basically took care of the permission & legal stuff and left me to do the design&print work. They pay for all the printing work & materials. they get as many posters & flyers as they ordered. I keep some posters extra (say 50 or so) and if I did the design aspect right, and people like em, they usually sell for quite a bit each at poster &or art shows. This way they (promoters) get a good deal & my (design)work gets paid eventually too. I'm prepared to call what I make like this, a living. (mind you, I do invites, stickers, album covers etc too and stuff others designed)

TheSpirals:
First of all, it's PAID, not 'payed'. If the promoter is willing to pay for posters, well, great! There are some people here who charge a flat fee for designing a poster. Some promoters I work with give me a (very small) amount of cash upfront to cover my hard costs. I think that's a win. If the band is selling your posters on consignment like you suggest, well, that's great for you. I've certainly spent a lot of time at shows I didn't really like selling my posters to the six disinterested kids in attendance. If the band is doing that for you, great. Most of my sales come from after the show, through my website, through Etsy,at Flatstock, et cetera. |

Seriously: This thread shows up on my website referral stats like, at least a couple of times a week.

whoops, i guess i didn't write that very clearly. i didn't mean that the band sells my posters for me. i meant that the band requests a poster from me so that they can promote their show, and they pay me for it....that's it. i sell them at the show myself just to make some extra cash from people who want them...if they didn't already grab them off the poles on the street.
cool to know that most of your sales are after the show. Last edited by thespirals; 05-22-2008 at 08:37 PM. |
