Usually, I just ask if the case of beer is cold, then I had over my doodles and split.. sometimes I put them in a plastic bag. Like one from the grocery store.. if its raining in the alley we do the exchange!

Yeah..just be upfront about what you expect from them and vice versa. I tell someone right away that I am licensing the artwork to them to use for specific items and for a specific time period. If they want to use the design for anything else other than what was agreed upon then they need to talk to me about it.
An email paper trail is better than a handshake. Just word it so it says that you are granting them the rights to use the design as a tour poster for bands x and y for whatever time period the tour is. If they want to use the design for anything else, then they need to tell you what for and you need to tell them how much. Also make sure that they give you a decent amount of the posters for you to do as you wish. Don't let them try and charge you for your copies since they're offset copies.

Had some recent dealings with a larger client recently that's made me very wary - basically tried to get me to sign away copyright on specific licensed work for no extra cost as a "routine formality"...chancers!
After double checking all correspondence and treatments/agreements submitted to them I'm confident I've safeguarded myself, though I found the following link very useful in clarifying certain things, particularly in regard to rights of usage (it'll definitely be of help to UK based people): AOI Information Centre It's got a well worded contract also which is good as a guide at least: AOI Information Centre Hope this helps others...I found it one of the better organised/presented resources out there. |
