    hi,
im playing devils advocate here. i know little about ai. but from what i read you have to pay to submit a design to possibly go in the publication (30 dollars if im correct).

now i know some people are strongly against not getting paid to do a gig. how about not only not getting paid, but having to pay for something to be considered? plus the panel is somewhat biased.

just something i thought about. if you want to slam me. i dont care. thanks!

I only ever submit to Print. It's $35 for each submission up to 7 and $195 for an unlimited amount after that. I get a chuckle out of seeing a dirty old Supersuckers poster or a Murder City Devils single among all of the fancy ad agency packaging and annual reports. I kinda see it as working from the inside. And, since I'm practically rolling in money up here, what's a measly $195?

gotcha. i just found it ironic ya know?
of course you can afford it jeff.. i cant wait to hang out with you at the penthouse at a show.

just seems kinda funny. its like those things, send in 30 dollars and we will tell you if you can be a model

which reminds me of how some people who dont get paid , do it to get in the door and open outlets.. seems ai opens doors, and that you have to pay in cash.
    does that make sense?

Funny ya know, cause Im sure Ive seen Mr Chantrys stuff in a Design Annual... its a breath of fresh air to see cd art or music stuff amongst designers ads for Bank or Cars etc... Figured itd cost but well $195 is cheap considering you get to have ya stuff in a Advertising industry wank book.. Myself, if I had the bucks would pay the money and submit my notes to get milk and bread, or close door after you come in signs as mocked up ad work...Id be so cutting edge theyd need to put a warning on my page for paper cuts.

BTW...I talk alot of shit, so dont mind me, I just love you guys!!! and gals...

i guess the irony is you have to pay money to submit.
i know it can help further you in the world of art-but its parallel to doing pro bono work to futher yourself too.

seems both are ways-and both you have to pay.

I've just recenly submitted to Print's Regional Design Annual. This is the first time I've submitted anything to any annual...we'll see? I've never really tried before as I've always heard that the judging on most annuals was very political. Plus much of the work accepted was designed strictly to make it into the annual. (And the work I do on a daily basis is too watered down by the client usually to be worth submitting.) That is why so many agencies do pro-bono stuff...just so the client cannot wreck the design and then they have a piece worthy of an annual.

I look at the entry fees in two ways; It sucks that your paying for something that has a better than good chance to not even get in.And THEY make all the money selling the annuals. But on the other hand, if it does get in, the exposure and promo value are worth far more than the $35.00 entry fee. Some agencies will focus a huge part of their yearly marketing just on getting into design annuals, then send out press releases and copies of the award to their clients as promo.

So there is value IF you get in.

smile and dave gink, you've prettly well nailed it. we've gotten stuff into annuals and it's almost always for pro-bono work or cheap ass work. which we did for the creative freedom. i don't know about how political the judging really is. there may be a degree of it, but it must not be too political or we'd never have gotten in an annual. but, i'm not sure being in these annuals has really helped us much. clients don't call up and say, "hey, just saw your stuff in CA and i'd love for you to do some work for us!" but it does give you a little credibility within the trade.

the aa boys had a ton of stuff in CA. and that's the one to be in!

kleinsmith had like 10 pieces or so in print's regional. amazing.
