    Default so, approaching artists directly.

any advice on approaching the artist directly for a poster?

stuff ive done tus far has gone through promoters, but recently i took a chance and shot an email to a band directly to do a poster on their upcoming tour. theyre interested in it, but dont seem to know much about how it all works.

whats the best way to word or approach them with the specifics without trying to sound like im needing to defending myself (you know, about why i would have a right to seel them.)

I'll forward you the email I send out tonight when I get home. Just be honest about your intentions, the run size, etc. They may want proofs, a certain number of the prints or other things. Be polite and you'll probably go far.

try and deal with only one person. either the manager or one of the band members. this will help if they need to see proofs. nothing is more futile than getting direction from 5 different people ( usually contridictory ).

DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!

best advice to appear on GP for weeks.

Avoid this situation at all costs. Nothing sucks more than dealing with five separate people/groups of people, none of whom are communicating with each other. Nothing will cause you more headaches and waste more time. You will become a conduit for all their little passive-aggressive battles about money and control; they will fuck around with changes and indecisiveness until the last possible minute, and you the printer will be left to pick up their slack and scramble to meet a deadline.

    Some addendum:
Make sure you know if the person you are talking to is also the entity responsible for PAYING you, and if not, make sure you are in contact with that entity BEFORE beginning work.

Avoid situations where more than one executive decisionmaker needs to approve art/proofs; and make sure that person is your contact. Approval-by-committee, by its very nature, will result in neverending trivial changes, delays, and micromanagement.
Crosshair pushing here until its limit the bringing together.

"Every single Crosshair poster I've ever seen is almost exactly the same. Do these guys even have a bit of creativity in them? I mean, come one - shitty old building pics photoshopped with text over them. Pretty pathetic to say the least."

"it just seems like so little effort is put into creating this? am i missing something?"

True in all print ventures. Whatever you do, don't let them show it to their wife.

definitely, ive brought it right to the decision maker...and for the most part he even told me it would be between just he and i.

im honestly not even looking to be paid, just looking to have my copies to sell and make my own money and recoup myself. i was just looking for an easy way to say that...

yep. i did one corperate job that went thru 72 CHANGES!!!! everyone was really nice and i got paid well but........72 CHANGES!!!!! it appeared that every middle management person that touched it had to make one change to justify their job. the funky part was the end result basically amounted to an orange box.
