No. Even if they have it registered, no. It is there as a deterent for people that want to steal it or use it without permission. But they should use it. But they don't have to.

I had thought if the trademarked piece of cop was mentioned a few times in body copy they had to show the TM on the first time mentioned.

I see what you are saying. When you DO use it, yes you only have to show it the first time. That way your layout isn't overun with the "TM"s. And that is supposed to cover you for the whole piece. Just like when they use someone's name, they use the whole name at first mention and then only use the last name throughout the rest of the piece. Sounds like you got a good understanding.
