approach bands you know, local bands and the like, say "hey, ill do posters for your show". then do a bunch of flyers. do this alot. make em stand out, gimmiks!. give the local bands a reason to want YOU to do their posters for them. this will build you a small portfolio. theres enough DIY silkscreening FAQ's on this site and the internet should you eventually (keyword eventually) choose to go that route. but start off with the old photocopies. dont worry about money, dont charge people for designs initially (why should they pay you?), if they can fund the photocopying thats all you should work out.

thats step1. do that first, then come back and ask for step2. or youll just skip right to it. im on to you. that first step is important. builds trust.

also. dont use stock distressed fonts. distress em yourself. ill be watching you. if i see a cliche 'crumbly font' i can recognize, im instantly docking you 10 points.

Here's a great tip: Ignore everyone's advice. Take your own personal approach to your needs/desires and how you feel you can make it work. If you make a mistake, so what? Experience is the best and most solid teacher you can have. Otherwise, you're living through someone else's advice, way of thinking, lifestyle, and then you become another clone...

My advice falls under this theory as well..

8balls advice is really good, unless you hate advice...in which case my advice is to go to engineering school and study synthetic technologies or maybe say 'fuck it' and learn to be a blacksmith.

I took the personal advice of a few big wig poster artists and I was up and running with very few problems inside of 3 months. Making money and advancing my career by leaps. I have been doing rock art for over 15 years. With the advice and help of others I have moved forward further in the last 2 years than in the 13 before it combined. So I disagree kind of. There is plenty of good advice to be had.

On the other hand you need to do your own thing. Listen to what people say and extract what you need.

Example: Everyone told me NOT to do posters for metal bands. Thye said they would never sell. I am glad I didn't listen. I do just fine selling posters for metal bands. It has finaly gotten me work doing shirts, etc, for other metal bands.
