    Default hmm question

if you got permission form a band member and they say yeah do what you want i dont care. then you tell some one your doing it and they got permission form a differant band and you make posters and so do they can you get in any kind of trouble? i like the artist who is doing the posters but i also would liek to do them just for one show and since its in like 2 months i will have enough time to put them up around town and stuff especialy sicne i made liek 200 in three days. well just asking.

It's best to get permission. We have instances like that happen occasionaly where the venue asks us to do a poster so we do and the band had done one themselves through somone else.

As long as you have someone's permission that is directly involved with the show, I wouldn't sweat it. It's just nice to be the only one and some take that more seriously than others.

Also sometimes there is a flyer AND a poster made for the same show. The flyer being b&w and more widely distributed. The poster being color/screen printed/fewer made. (again, in my experience)

I'd say definitely get permission before doing a poster. In fact I believe most everyone here would also say that. Either the Band/management, the promoter or the venue itself can give permission. Otherwise you're pretty much producing a bootleg poster.

    Here's how I do things:

Two venues (bottom of the hill and Thee Parkside) have given me carte blanche to do posters for whatever show I want. I book at thee parkside so I coordinate with firehouse and occassionally richie or a few others for posters there. Bottom backs me in everythiung I do. They are totally awesome but I still try and coordinate with Jason Munn and Justin Walsh and make sure that we aren't stepping on each other's toes.

Most other shows, I go through the headlining band and/or their management.

Occassionally, an opening band will have me do a poster and that is usually ok as well. But I usually check and make sure that no one else is doing something.

Man, I really need to close my browser. I;m past deadline on this cd packaging. Crap.

Oh, I'm sure I'm going to get holy hell for this, but I've made "unofficial" posters for gigs that have already had a poster made. I didn't make them with the intent to sell at the gig but to promote the show even more. Nobody complains; the band, promoter, fans dig it because there's more exposure (promotion) for the show. Bands do this all the time as there is usually multiple bands on a single bill, and sometimes people from those bands (or a person who the band knows) makes a poster..multiply that by 4 bands and you have 4 different posters for the same gig.

Now, I could see some problems if you made a poster as well as someone else making one, and you trying to move in and SELL em at the show. As far as getting permission, it's a judgement call. Again, I've made posters without permission and haven't experienced anything bad. My belief is any promotion is good promotion. Then again, I used my judgement on which shows I made posters for. Most of them have been for "punk" shows so it's usually an "anything goes" attitude. People on here would say not to listen to my advice, which is fine. I'm just letting you know my experience on the matter.

i think thats kosher, just make sure you have permission to do it. I did a poster for Brand New for a show in KS, while they were still selling Ewings killer tour poster. But it is a business, so just make sure not to step on anyones toes or burn any bridges in the process.
