There are 24 hours in a day. Charge them for 24 hours.

day rate means even if it takes 5 minutes you charge for the whole day.

Simple formula for coming up with a number:
Annual Overhead: rent, utilities, insurance, equip, transport, supplies, taxes, misc business expenses
PLUS
Reasonable Annual salary
DIVIDE BY
230
PLUS
Reasonable Profit margin 10–15%
EQUALS
Day rate
So, $24,000 annual overhead, plus $40,000 annual salary is $64,000. Divide that by 230 and get $278, add 10% profit of $27, that gives you $305/per diem.
Clients that require hand holding get day rates. Ones that trust their mechanic get the hourly fix.
