my question is were you actually commissioned to do the job by the people paying or was it your friend? did print shop A actually say "we will not do it/can't get it done/find someone else"... it sounds like your friend panicked without actually getting in touch with the other printer to find out what was going on... I mean if he is local he could have also gone to the shop rather than phoning. I would charge your friend a kill fee or at more likely tell him he owes you several beer nights..., I don't think you can go after the film festival, they had nothing to do with you directly...

man, that sucks. I hate it when clients come at u like a tornado in the first place, and to hear they bailed is ridiculous. Id say at least a 100$ bucks.

    Kill fee nothing.
Someone comes at me with their hair on fire, needing something produced in 48 hours, they pay 100% up front.
Because I know nobody else will do it. They have no other option.
Either they accept my terms and pay a rush rate, up front, in full, or they balk and their project doesn't happen, i.e., I don't have to deal with it.
    Works for me.

Did you have a contract? Does the contract have a kill fee in it? If not I doubt you will be able to collect anything.

make a list of your costs and time, convert the time to $$$

ask the film fest guy and your buddy out for a beer.

show them the costs. indicate what you can eat, indicate what you are out.

Ask them what they can do to pay you back the money they are out. (sounds like they both were in on the decision to rush the job through at the last minute)

If they balk at cash, then tell them you expect to get their next 4 or 5 poster jobs so you can make your money back. Get them to pay for the beers.

Welcome to screenprinting. It's not all just pretty colors.

true, but in this situation he should be able to charge for films and ink mixing. it would not be a kill fee but charges for work done on a canceled job.

If someone cancels a job or changes art with us and films have been run we almost always charge them for the films.

Hmm good points all around. Yeah, my buddy is pretty blameless here, and I'm pretty sure the client will pay- I was mainly curious about the fair amount...
