In the quest to establish them as a future client I wouldn't charge any kill fee since you are going to use the materials for something else. Any project specific stuff like films and sep time they should be charged 100% plus labor.

Nope. 50% is my standard too. That's the kill fee, because you re-arranged your schedule, wasted a day, pushed off other work, and in this case bought materials. Also, your business was now expecting a certain amount of $ business that is no longer coming in. All of that's easily worth 50%.
20% is WAY too low.

adding: like luther, i don't always charge a kill fee, but when i waive it,
a) i let the client know that i did waive it
b) and tell them how much it costs
c) and why i charge kill fees

I go with 50% also.

What Luna said but for me it also depends on the total cost of the job. Larger jobs ($5K +) I take a smaller kill fee. (up front, before work starts)
Like if it's $300 total and I just spent half my day running around prepping for the job that then doesn't happen, that time is easily worth $150.
Time is time. They either pay for wasting it or they pay for putting it to good use. It's entirely up to them. But they should pay.
Crosshair pushing here until its limit the bringing together.

"Every single Crosshair poster I've ever seen is almost exactly the same. Do these guys even have a bit of creativity in them? I mean, come one - shitty old building pics photoshopped with text over them. Pretty pathetic to say the least."
"it just seems like so little effort is put into creating this? am i missing something?"
Yeah good points all around. I charge a 30% kill fee most of the time, but sometimes just ask for 50% upfront. It depends on client, if I have worked with them before, etc. I was just thinking in this case, all of the materials bought will be used anyways, and the job was called in to him by the friend. This in turn could really piss off a client if they had no clue (not saying they didnt) but could really ruffle some feathers depending on how it was handled. but i agree with the time spent and rushing around is definitely worth the compensation...
