BOB WADE :
40 YEARS OF BLOOD, SWEAT, & BEERS
Bob “Daddy-O” Wade, creator of local sculpture icons such as the “Hula Hut Fish”, the “Ranch 616 Snake” and the “Shoal Creek Saloon Saints Helmet”, will install an elaborate “Retrospectacle” at the South Austin Museum of Popular Culture from Sept. 12 – Oct. 24th.
Wade, a UT and Berkeley grad and “Texas Funk” artist of other well known works such as New York’s “Lone Star Café Giant Iguana” and “San Antonio’s Biggest Cowboy Boots in the World”, will give viewers an insider’s look at rare photodocumentation, photocanvases, oddball artifacts, and early sculpture/ installations such as his 1975 “Texas Formal Garden” at Laguna Gloria which featured live chickens, (early Austin Weird).
The recipient of three NEA Grants, Bob participated in the Paris and Whitney Biennials and has been the subject of numerous articles in Newsweek, People, Art in America, as well as documentaries and books.
Wade’s works are in the collections of The Menil in Houston, AT&T, the Austin, Houston, and Dallas museums of art, and the Royal palace of Monaco.
As well known art critic Dave Hickey said in US World & Report, “Wade’s biggest influence is the homecoming float.” And legendary singer songwriter Willie Nelson said, “Now that I understand art, I realize what a genius Daddy-O Wade really is.”
There will be a public reception held on September 12th at the Museum, from 7-10pm, with snacks served by Ranch 616.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Ty Grimes & Flashback featuring Bruce Bowland.
Parking is nonexistent at the Museum, so please park on Collier Street.
