Default Naturally: Art by Christopher Bowman & DWITT May30th

This is a show a long time coming. Christopher Bowman (whose name you may recognize from his illustrations on Paul Gardner's early posters) was my first painting studio partner up at Bemidji State University. He has reunited with the rest of us BSU alums who founded the Back Alley Gallery and we are proud to present this show.

We have a wager with each other to see who can produce more work for the show, so you all are guaranteed plenty to look at (and hopefully purchase as well). My Birdolith series in its entirety will be on display, including new paintings and drawings, in addition to all of Christopher's work and our collaborative stuff.

This is the postcard image we made, using a monoprint from one of the collaborative art prints we've created for the show:

This weekend Bowman is staying at my house and we're going to have a marathon art weekend, working on paintings, prints, drawings and whatever else we can find to work on.

Hope to see some of ya'll at the show!

    Birdolith no.41

I am aiming to have over 100 of the birdolith's done for the show.

Chris and I have a really productive weekend, and have another show together in the works for 2010.

    thanks.

The star of the show will be a painting we're both working on that measures 48 x 60 inches. It's been making us giddy to see it develop.

Here's our fancy press release written by Letta Wren:

“Naturally,” Christopher Bowman and DWITT, Opening at Back Alley Gallery

ST. PAUL, MN—Somewhere between the real and the surreal, undead pegacorns frolic with art lovers and deer sprout trees from their bellies. Where is this magical world? Why, at the Back Alley Gallery, “Naturally.”

Opening May 30th, “Naturally” brings together local mixed-media artists Christopher Bowman and DWITT at St. Paul’s B.A.G. Bowman, a long-time educator with a wide-ranging, lyrical style pulls inspiration from every passing fancy, every stray observation, while DWITT, primarily an illustrator and painter, has an instantly recognizable style that draws on his experiences in the rich traditions of graphic novels and rock posters. In their first collaboration, the friends found an endless supply of shared imagination. They laughed uproariously and they painted furiously as a friendly wager spurred them to create nearly 200 solo and collaborative pieces. Building from each other’s disparate directions, Bowman and DWITT have forged a uniquely beautiful and visually arresting canon.

    Opening Reception:
    May 30th, 7-10pm
    Back Alley Gallery (B.A.G)
    262 E. 4th Street, #LL2
    Lowertown St. Paul
Continuing on May 31st and June 6-7. noon - 5pm

    Artists:

Christopher Bowman is an arts educator who frequently finds fodder in his classroom interactions, using enthusiastic student questions as springboards into new and innovative directions for his own work. Responding to “what the work wants,” Bowman prides himself on pushing his own artistic boundaries, adopting whichever materials and ideas catch his eye in the endless hunt for collage components. He has been exhibiting in galleries for 15 years, but sees the current show as another turning point in his career, an inducement to throw open his mind and let the work come out, well, naturally. DWITT is a veteran of the comic book, rock poster, gallery, publishing, and even gaming worlds. Under the influence of varying quantities of caffeine, endorphins, canned beer, and Slayer albums, DWITT is a man with the stamina to create 30 flyers in 30 days, armed with nothing more than a vivid imagination and well-honed talent. His visceral images are instantly recognizable with emphatic lines that thrum and pulse, each one the embodiment of DWITT’s many influences and passions. See more at dwitt.com

We spent abour 7 hours setting up the show yesterday. We've got another couple hours scheduled on Thursday to do lights and labeling.

I am very proud of how this show looks.

I'll post pics when I get some.
