Default GUYBURWELL art opening @ Peoples

This month at Peoples Art of Portland Gallery we present TWO shows at once.* In the main area we are featuring the solo retrospective works of the amazing artist and designer Guy Burwell.* In the side areas we are presenting “The Sum Of Our Parts” – a group collaborative 2d/3d/install effort among 6 artists, all transplants to Portland, all working together to define their individual styles – creating works together and truly a ‘sum of our parts’.* ---Chris Haberman and Jason Brown, curators/Peoples Art of Portland Gallery
    *

    In the main area:
    "The Selected Retrospective of GUYBURWELL"
    *
Guy Burwell is a commercial artist and designer, making a big mark in the world of rock posters, but also in graphic design, commercial content and fine art.* His work is recognized nationally and internationally, exhibiting extensively across the U.S., and in England and Germany, but also commercially working in the field of design – from working with Vinton Studios locally to Nickelodeon and bands like Kings of Leon; Burwell has done it all. This uncommon show at Peoples Gallery is a retrospective of Burwell’s long career, including over 100 posters, prints, originals models and never before seen original works.

In the beginning we came to posters out of necessity. We needed to make art, and early on we needed music, then we needed to see shows and also some beer. Then we needed to make art for the shows, for the music and for the beer and it all seemed to come together. The art became the posters for the show and secured for us the music and the beer and here it is years later and we still need the art and the music and the shows though not so much the beer, and that's just as well, really. But we weren't prepared for what would happen.

Years of music required years of posters required piles of art. Drawings of all kinds, figures of all shapes and sizes (I'm decidedly a figurative fellow as is obvious), prints in all colors, music of all kinds (all the kinds I like, anyway), rarely glimpsed all in one place or at one (or two or three) glances are afforded this rare chance to be viewed in bulk, in one place, to any kind of depth.

Part of the rarity of this chance will be glimpses afforded to some of the odd items, the studio print misfits, and never heralded cast offs produced in the process of printing all of those regular editions. In addition to a wide selection of stock prints, many the last of older editions, and brand new prints not yet rare, there will be test prints and exploratory color variations and one of a kind process examples not usually seen outside of the print room. And since we are usually there alone, it's only been us to see them up to now.

The other half of the show covers what happens first, before all of the prints come out the other side of the
screen. Before the push and pull of ink comes minutes hours and days and months spent pushing a pencil, doodling with pens, compositing with marker, and trying to figure it all out on paper. Scraps and sheets of paper.
Napkins, matchbooks, sketchbooks, ledgers, cardboard. Gleaned from boxes full of sheets and scraps, we have a selection of sketches, layouts, final art, doodles and rough drafts seeing daylight for the first time in any public way.

For the people who are interested in the depths of the process, of this process, there is something for everyone.
The seeds, the germinated pods, the new sprouts, the young plants, saplings, oaks and eventual stumps of the cycle of natural creation. We just made that up.
    ---Guy Burwell, 2011

    Also Showing: multi-artist collaborative project:
    “The Sum Of Our Parts"
This feature project will be shown through the rest of the 3,000 sq foot gallery of Peoples, accompanying Burwell’s retrospective.
    *
*This unique collaborative art project really asks the question: “Where are we from? And how did we get here to Portland, Oregon?”* All of the artists chosen were originally from places outside of Oregon (from little ole Iowa to a little town in England), and each was a bit familiar with each other, but had never worked together.* They were chosen as individual Portland based artists because of their different styles and backgrounds, ranging from graffitti/design to photo realism and installation.* Some are self-taught and some have been schooled in their crafts.* All of these artists are working artists in Portland, creating and selling their works on a consistent basis.* They were asked to collaborate with each other, melding works and styles, to create works that defined them as Portland artists.* Portland is a friendly place, and the art scene is a great example of the city’s attractive community of people working together.* This show reflects the “Portland” community art aesthetic of “working together” towards a common goal, artist lives, visions, and histories entangled; truly, the Sum Of Our Parts.
    *
From lead artist Heidi Elise Wirz:
    *
“The Sum of Our Parts is a showcase of modern mythology and individual growth, told in collaboration, by some of Portland’ brightest young painters and illustrators.* Portland, OR is in itself, a modern American melting pot - one of the unique cities in America where people of artistic inclination are drawn in hopes of finding a beautiful* and inspiring place to work.** The artists in this show come from as close as Oregon, to as far away as the UK.* As people from different backgrounds, I ask the artists to collaborate, and incorporate their own mythos into the pieces.* Whether it be tales from old, of their country of origin, how they relate emotionally to their place of birth, and upbringing, or their daily quest to get coffee, and make each day beautiful. But truly,* it is up to the collaborators to decide.* I am looking forward greatly to seeing these stories all fall into each other.”* – Lead Artist, Heidi Elise Wirz, May 2011. Portland, OR.
