WHAT IS THIS? The Settlement is a partnership of 4 galleries in the top floor of Pioneer Mall, supported and spearheaded by mall guru Bob Buchanan and his support of the art scene to allow artists to work and operate the following galleries as a community project. With so many great folks involved in these projects, we feel that art galleries in this type of environment, is a rare and amazing representation of many different parts of the Portland art scene.
THE SETTLEMENT:
PEOPLE'S ART OF PORTLAND - 2d/3d space, formerly a Toy Store, this gallery is an "art store" of colorful art, books, and fun stuff with a rotating display of over 100 artists from Portland. Operated by artist/curators, Chris Haberman and Jason Brown.
PLACE - Installation, commentary, spatial art. The first of the 4 galleries to remain a constant since Spring 2010, PLACE is operated by artist/curators Gabe Flores and Gary Wiseman. This Month, PLACE will be opening Terror and Ego, new installations by Joshua Berger, Vanessa Calvert, Rhoda London, Emily Nachison, TJ Norris, and Dustin Zemel.
STORE - Store is the result of a collaboration between the Settlement and PNCA, and "continues to develop and feature installation works by the BFA students of Victor Maldonado's Art, Ethics, and Transgression class." Regularly Operated by Pacific Northwest College of Art.
TRADE - Trade is "the most fluid of the galleries which focuses on local institutions that fill a creative and experimental niche," starting with curators from Research Club, Recess, Golden Rule, and the White Box.
We welcome you to venture these 4 spaces during this GRAND OPENING, or during regular business hours.
As of January, we will be on a regular FIRST THURSDAY schedule (open until 8pm) and have MONTHLY 3rd Saturday OPENING events (6-10pm).
