Default Serie Project and Black Swan Screenprinting present: "Milagros" in Houston, TX

    Hi gang,

For the last couple of months since Flatstock 24, Ann Brooks of Black Swan Screenprinting and myself have been working hard to plan a debut of the Serie Project's work in Houston, TX.

Well, the zero hour is finally upon us, with the work going up for sale and on display at the Winter Street Studios this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 20th-22nd.

If you don't really know what we're all about, here's the story in a nutshell: After participating in a screenprinting residency at Self Help Graphics, painter Sam Coronado grew an interest in establishing his own print shop. Established initially as a vehicle for Coronado to invite local Chicano artists to experiment in screenprinting, the Serie Project has grown into an annual artist residency that produces 10-20 screenprints per year at not cost to the participating artist. We're a nonprofit!

But that's not all. As an organization, the Serie Project also works hard to promote screenprinting as a fine art technique by actively promoting, exhibiting, and documenting the work of participating artists. We have prints in the collections of the Smithsonian, Benson Latin American Collection, IPCNY, UTSA, UALR, etc. and recently held an exhibit of 40 prints in Slovakia. But the going is still tough, and we could use some support from Houston during this short event.

Check out this short video that the Black Swan crew made to promote the event:

The prints that i have seen in the Serie Project archives are some of the best/most innovative screenprinting examples in existence. Anybody within a few hours of Houston should get out and support this show......

In the fast paced modern world, we get overwhelmed by images, to the point most of it is visual garbage, disposable, with no meaning other than a way to sell the latest fashions or food. That’s one of the main reasons the first visit of The Serie Project to Houston is so important, and worth making the effort to visit at Winter Street Studios upstairs gallery, located at 2101 Winter Street this next weekend, Aug 20 and 21st. ‘Milagros’ showcases a selection of limited edition serigraphs produced over 17 years under the direction of Austin based artist, screenprinter, and educator Sam Coronado. Over 250 different people, representing a who’s who of leading Hispanic artists from the United States, Mexico, and around the world, have participated in the Serie Project, producing an amazing body of work using the screenprinting medium.

The exhibition in Houston will open art lovers eyes. Coronado’s vision is to put the artists, many who had never done a screenprint, alongside master printers, and have them work collaboratively to produce an original print over the course of a week. With no preconceived notions of what is possible, the resulting works have pushed the boundaries of the typical flat colored screenprint into a dizzy universe of imagery, with textures and effects and layers of meaning literally jumping of the page. Each print truly is a reflection of the individual artist’s style. The importance of the work in the field of fine art printmaking is just starting to be appreciated, with many of the pieces ending up in major museums, art galleries, and private collections.

Houston’s own Black Swan Screen Printing are hosting the event, with the exhibit curated by Armando Rodriguez. The opening is this Friday Aug 20th from 6-10 pm. The next day at 1 pm, there will be a Gallery Talk featuring Sam Coronado and staff, discussing the work and the Serie Project, followed by live screenprinting demonstrations. Prints will be available for purchase. For more information about the Serie Project, visit Serie Project. For info about the opening call Black Swan at 713-863-0200.

Houston folks should make it out to this tonight. Sam and Coronado Studio have been a huge part of Austin's screenprinting scene. Many gig poster artists have been trained there and been allowed to use the studios. If it wasn't for Coronado studio and the Serie Project I would still be cleaning pools and Peveto would still be printing in his cat-piss garage.
