In Austin I'd say rental for sure...parking is a bitch but transit system isn't too good...this is just my opinion though. Also, traffic during SXSW is a pain in the ass.

IF you're going to stay in the Downtown area, a rental might be a liability. BUT- if you're going to want to leave downtown, good luck w/ our shitty public transit system w/out a car.
How about- rent a scooter? You can park it just about anywhere, so no worries about parking, and it's gotta be cheaper than a car. Weather is usually hella nice for it as well.

Thanks for all the great tips. Based on where we are staying and your recommendations. We will be renting a car. I doubt traffic can be any worse than my commute to work these days. Since we are arriving early, a car will grant us the opportunity to see some sights outside the city. Any thoughts there? I still want to see that studio you are bragging about Alex.
