Default Clear backround in Photoshop

If I have a Jpeg logo and I using the brush tool with a clear setting.
How do I keep the clear backround so I can put a different color
behind the logo. I know how to do this in illustrator but this logo has alot going on and I was think it might be easier to do this in PS.

put your artwork with no background on it's own layer. then add a layer under it, and you can change the color on that layer.

I have the artwork and it has a white backround and is a flatten jpeg.

I opened a new layer with no backround.

Do I just copy and paste to the new layer? I'm kinda lost

It kinda sucks that it's a flattened file. There are a few ways to do it and hard to suggest exactly what's right without knowing what kind of edges your dealing with.

I guess the easiest to explain would be to...

1. select all the white that you don't want.
Do this with the magic wand tool. Or the select menu/color range tool.

2. Invert your selection. (Select menu/Inverse)

3. Layer via copy. not sure where that is in the menus but it's "apple key+J"
This will give you a new layer without the white.
Now anything you put below it will show up in those areas.

Hope that made sense for you.

white is white.
if you create a new file and select the background as transparent and then drop the flattened image into it the white will be the same as any other color.

you may just have to go in and delete the white.

Also when you do this you can get some yucky looking pixelation on the edges that are hard to avoid. You can help get rid of this with defringe (Layer menu/matting/defringe...)

I got it figured out and now have the logo in illustrator.

I have to print a 36" x 300" vinyl banner with a beer logo in the center with a blue backround. Then the logo that I have been talking about on the right and left side of the banner.
Now When I try and copy the logo all I get are two bounding boxes and no logo.

What a mess. I have been trying all day to get the ESP logo so I wouldn't have to do all this.

A PSD should retain the transparent background...although I may not be understanding the problem correctly.
