I am now swinging my pica pole in salute to the knowledge here.
I agree with Kozik, Rave fonts are the worst.
I don't know if it's still in print, but the book "Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works" by Erik Spiekermann is a great primer for those looking for a brief history of type and how to use it well. It's written in an easy-to understand style, not in designer-ese. I highly recommend it.
yes, that book is still in print, and is very very good ...
the typophile people just started this psa on their site:

I also start to projectile vomit whenever I see anything
'Emigre' or 'Raygun'.
Let's split the conversation in two and now ask what I feel are better questions...what headline face makes you blush right now and what text face do you see at night?
For me, no particular headline comes to mind...they're too specific to each piece. However, I keep using Akidenz Grotesk for all my text lately.
And Art, because I set his type for a few years, I think is still using Franklin Gothic and cousins et al for his text.
Duhhh, I just reread this and realized I'm a nerd big time.
A fairly recent, interesting read on typography is Steven Heller&etc's collection of famous and rare type-related essays called "Texts on Type."
I've seen enuff of Emigre's Dogma.
I like Jim Parkinson's faces (http://www.typedesign.com/).
I found "American Wood Type" at the public library. It's overdue.
hey sally, where ya been?!
