Colors get lighter when I 'save for web'

I recently noticed that when I 'save for web' in photoshop colors get washed out. Have I messed up my color settings or profiles?

I've looked up some articles on the web and found that there are some arguments about the best way to fix the problem. To be honest I've been working for 12 hours and this stuff is going over my head right now.

Anyone have any quick tips or solutions for fixing this?

What is your color mode and your proof setup mode? It sounds to me like there could be something being viewed in CMYK. If you're saving for web it's going to be an RGB image, so if your proof setup is some kind of CMYK, then you'll see slight variations between what you see in PS and what you see in the web file. When working for web after working for print I often forget to change between Working CMYK and one of the RGBs and when I view the saved file I sometimes see similar inconsistencies.
