If anybody is familiar with this program, can you tell me what kind of files you save as so you can view them in other applications or post them to the web? There's no option of jpg or gif.

Go to FILE-EXPORT BITMAP. You can set your resolution in the PREFERENCES under IMPORT/EXPORT. I think the default is 90 dpi. You can also associate Inkscape with GIMP (a free raster editing program) so your bitmaps open in GIMP where you can save to more raster formats like jpeg and gif.
