Illustrator question

so i know crap about illustrator, but need to make something that is 152" wide. is there a way to do a gradient overlay? basically i have like a vector carbon fiber background that looks pretty boring and i want to add some shading type of stuff on top of it, but can't figure it out.

Not real clear on what type of look you're going for.

Pics? Or better description of what exactly you need to accomplish.

say i have a textured background, i just want to throw a radial gradient on top of it, but still be able to see the texture.

set a new layer over it and make it a gradient and then set to multiply. use gradient tool to change directions. this may be ghetto but its the only way i know how.

Bring the texture to the front and adjust the opacity in your Transparency tool? Or adjust the transparency of the radial gradient?

Open the "Transparency" window... you have different overlay options similar to photoshop.

You'll get all sorts of crazy banding if you are going to print a 152" long gradient.

yeah, banding sucks in illustrator. photoshop gradients are way cleaner

thanks for the help, here's a quick sample of what i'm talking about, would do it in photoshop but it's huge.

Radial gradient, clear in the middle or maybe down to 1% opacity, then change the opacity in the black down until you achieve the blend? Adjust the bars of the gradient as needed.

Or a gaussian blur of a compound path.
