I used the instructions here to set it up:

macosxhints.com - Use Gmail to send iPhone email on EDGE and wi-fi

I got the "Cannot Connect Using SSL" error.

    I turned off SSL.

Then it just said it could not send from the server.

    I've tried variations:
    smtp.gmail.com
    smtp.Gmail.com:587
    Gmail.com:587
    gmail.com:587
    Gmail.com
    gmail.com

    Cannot get it to work.

You shouldn't have to make any manual settings. Its all built in. Just choose GMAIL when you first go to MAIL on your iPhone.

    Right?

Or - do it like I do by just going to http://www.gmail.com on your iphone. Works like a charm.

I think that's what it looks like the very first time you launch, when you've never used it before. I set up email accounts already. When I open mail, it goes straight to a screen with:

    Inbox
    Outbox
    Trash

    I figured it out.

    smtp.gmail.com
    SSL turned on.

    Works.
