Default Wet Behind The Ears: Tools To Get Started

For someone starting out what would you recommend to get started being a digital poster artist?

Software: Photoshop, Streamline, Illustrator, etc

What software would you recommend and what task would you use it for?

Hardware: Wacom tablet, scanners, printers

What hardware would you recommend and what task would you use it for?

What size Wacom tablet would you get?

What scanners seem to work the best?

What printers are good for printing out 11 x 17 prints?

Books:

What books or resources would you recommend to learn your software and things like color separation, screen printing, etc.?

Misc.:

What resource material would you recommend get you on the right path? Books, clip-art, copyright free images, web pages, or groups?

What should you think about before you start your project? What dpi should you scan line art verse a photo? What would be a good dpi to set for your image?

What are your options for printing? Kinkos, screen printers, etc. And what should you know to prepare your artwork to be printed?

It would be great to have Kozik adopt me and show me the ropes.

But, I have special dietary needs and I am not sure he would want to deal with that.

Did my first digital print in 2001: everything before that was either 20% xerox/offsets and about 80% screenprints. But heres what Ive found works for me:
1- Illustrator. Tight vectorization make for cleaner images. File-size much easier to handle over internet connections.
2- A good scanner. PERIOD. The UMAX 'Astra' series are great. I have 2 1220's
3- The best machine for printing these things out on are the DOCUTECH machines, IMO. There is a big, mainframe DOCUTECH 9000 machine at the place I use. Set at slower settings, and using a CMYK Black, you can almost achieve a screenprinted look on 100lb. gloss cardstock. Several artists have made their 'careers' on these machines.
3- As far as reference books...do yourself a favor. Go to the FOrum categories on this site, and look under screenprinting. Theres a wealth of info there from people who've done it. And, this site is a real-time encyclopedia...meaning, you can always ask a question here and get all the responses you can handle...
