Default Cintiq 21ux or cintiq 12+microtek scanner?

    Here's my problem.

A while ago I was planning on getting an intuos tablet but then Chanks told me to wait until I can afford the cintiq 12wx. I agreed. But then I worked my ass off for some time and now the checks are coming in and I can afford the 21 ux. I want that one badly, I feel like the extra space would make it easier to work on. As El negro would say, Big is beautiful.

The thing is that I would also like a big 11x17 scanner, I think Microtek as a decent one for about $1000. So if I buy the cintiq 12wx I can also get the scanner instead of just having the cintiq 21ux.

Some of you have a small cintiq, I need your input on this.
Does the small surface bug you, would you prefer working on a bigger surface at times?
I plan on painting a lot digitally to do more commercial illustration jobs.

I can still wait a bit for a scanner, but if it doesn't make a big difference I would get the small tablet.

Springer, Chanks...I am looking in your direction. Others are welcome to join the discussion.

I could also get a lot of beer instead. Andymac, this time I am looking in your direction.

Also, any of you use painter X with a tablet?

I guess it depends on how large you like to work... a 21" cintiq would be massive and beautiful... but in the end would be a lot of dead/unused area for me... I mean with the 12" you can zoom in and work on areas anyway... I would go with the 12" and the scanner... or actually the 12" and a shit ton of beer...
Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, Hate me because I'm an asshole!

I am affraid that the display size, which is 10.3" W x 6.4" H, would be a bit small for me. I would end up zooming in and out all the time. I guess it's easy with the scroll thing on the tablet.

Go with the 21ux and a regular (cheaper) scanner if you must get one. I have a 21ux and was looking at the new 12 to carry around with my laptop. After asking some concept illustrators who have one they said that the 12 is good, but no where near as good as the 21. Something about bulkiness etc. They said to wait for the second gen 12. So I'm waiting.

I guarantee you will be very happy a 21. if you buy a 12 the next thing you know you'll be wishing you hadthe 21ux. I worked on a cintiq 15 for 3 years before getting a 21. The difference in work area is amazing. Go 21ux. wait on the scanner.

    my 2 cents.

I use Painter X almost every day. Been using Painter since '91. Hell of a learning curve if you are new to it, but the best drawing and painting program on the market. buy a painter X book and some tutorial DVDs and you'll be amazing yourself in no time.

PS: I really want that Hippie/VW bus painting you did.....still got it?

    Nope, sold that one, sorry.

Thanks for all the info. That's what I am worried of, liking the 12 and wishing I bought the bigger one. I already have a scanner, which is okay for now, but ultimately I want a big one so I can scan bigger paintings or illustrations.

    Johnny,

I'm in a similar boat. I was going to get the 12" just because of the size and the price but I 'm afraid of wishing I bought the 21" so, I'm waiting a couple months.

Good luck, I can't wait to get mine.

Used large format scanners with SCSI are cheap if you can find one. Check craigslist and ebay.

I know you want tabloid - but here's a microtek with a legal sized scanning bed in Montreal for $30: Microtek ScanMaker E3 - 4800x4800 dpi - 8.5"x13.5" scan surface

Ebay: scanner 11X17, Scanners, Computers Networking items on eBay.com

I have the 12 and do end up zooming in and out and dont do nearly as detailed work as you. Im happy with it but I think the 21 is the way to go.
