illustrator Question #456

If I have a shape and I want to repeat rotate it but not from the center of the shape, from outside it like this:





how can i make it so it rotates evenly and doesnt create a gap like this:

I draw a circle around what I want to rotate with the center of the circle being where I want the center to be, then group that and rotate...then delete the circles.

Get it?

And for that...360 divided by 5...so 72°. Choose rotate and copy.

when trying it like this it always rotates the center of the object, is there a way to specify the center point this way?

It's probably not any easier that Richie's way, but...
If you hold option (not sure what it is on a PC) while you click where you want the rotation point to be, you'll get a dotted line next to your cross hair and the rotate dialog will pop up. Except now it won't reset your rotation point. Put in 72º and click copy. repeat.

And don't forget control+d for duplicate transform, so you don't need to redo the rotation through the dialog.
