desktop computers ---> laptops

I'm thinking about getting 17" laptop for my next computer purchase because it's portable and it takes up less space (i have very small workspace). now i'm not sure anymore after my coworkers said: "designing on laptops sucks, the screen is too small".
who here does all their artwork on a laptop? do you like it?

having worked on both, i prefer a desktop and my widescreen monitor, plus if anything breaks on the desktop it's easier to replace. taking apart a laptop is a pain in the ass.

I have a laptop as my main machine and when I'm at my actual workspace I have a monitor/keyboard that I plug it into...

i think it would make me nuts. i have done some design on mine, and yes, it is a 13" screen, but even so, the screen never feels or looks right and i tend to work on it in places where i don't have an ergonomically proper set up, so i feel too close to the screen, hunched over, etc. all user dorkery, i know.

you can always hook into a desktop monitor, though that might defeat your purposes.

I'd go Macbook Pro if you were going Lappy. Or they make some big ass laptops in PCs, but like, what's more important to you? Desk space or not squinting?

The new iMacs are sweet. Get one of those, biggie sized.

I do. I don't mind it, but I'm a cruddy artist. The screen size really isn't a problem, yeah it's annoying, but what is more annoying is not being able to move your keyboard without moving the screen. And having the screen at a lower height is crappy, I tend to hunch over when doing stuff. But, the size and portability is nice. Oh, and not having a whole lot of ports for peripherals is sucky.

luna: you brought up a good point. i never thought about ergonomics! i can imagine how annoying it would be...
