Any of you self taught people care to share what you think are the best resources?

I know some basics, but figuring out how to trick out my wordpress blog (PHP) is my biggest hurdle right now. I would eventually like to create a portfolio site that has an inline wordpress blog or something like that.

wordpress is a major pain the ass to try to customize. stay away from it and your life will be less stressful. there has to be some type of simple blogging software out there that is easy to customize, but I haven't seen one. stay away from MovableType too.

ive heard wordpress and MT to be the two majors. what are the alternatives?

I suppose the difficulty of WP depends on the template/theme you are editing. The one i started with had few notes and the ones that were there were in spanish. so i kinda screwed myself.

well it depends on what your trying to do I guess.
customizing the design isn't majorly complicated if you understand xhtml and css. But when you want to try things like... "show x number post on the front page, x number on archives, comments here/there, blah blah" that kind of stuff, its a pain in the ass.

yesh. i took a theme and customized the f$%k out of it. some css and php hacking is definitely involved. not that hard once you get into it.
