Trapping/ Choke Question

So I was in my college class last night. It's basically a class to teach us about pre-press work. We started talking about knockouts and overprints.

My instructor said something to the effect that if you do a process job and you have a field of color that it is a good idea to trap it in a process job.
This makes no sense to me beccause I thought trapping and choking was more for doing spot color jobs.

If you do a process job wouldn't the halftones blend the field of color into the background?

Am I being clear enough about what I'm asking?

Unless you totally know what you're doing...don't trap shit for CMYK offset printing...especially in 2007. Most RIPS have built in trapping or your printer uses a dedicated program for trapping.

Offset jobs are trapped...its just like...not your problem.

this is also true for almost all spot offset jobs in 2007. unless you're dealing with an antiquated printer, the RIP can handle it.

So at one time was this a valid idea to trap for CMYK offset?

I thought the whole idea of trapping/choking was more for screenprinitng spots, is that a correct assumption?
