The only thing with sending in documents larger than 4 pages in spreads is that it can sort of be a pain in the ass when it comes to imposition when they ouput plates and ect... not always but sometimes, but it depends on how many of whatever page signatures there are, how it folds down, etc. But usually the prepress peeps can deal with that, I do, everyday.

Single pages with crops and bleeds should be what they want anyways... a printshop that doesn't have Quite Imposing or similar imposition software ain't playing at all.

I get screwed up booklets all day long. PM if this is still a live project and you want/need to give them preimposed pages.

Talked to the guy this morning and he wants "printer spreads (not reader spreads) with 1/8" bleed." I'm sure I'll be in touch, zed. Thanks (everyone).

At this rate, i'll never get out of the apparel game.

If they can't set up jobs to run forms in printer's spreads from reader's spreads they are hacks or lazy or stupid. The idea of getting the clients to submit printer's spreads is ridiculous. I have seen it before where people with no idea what they are doing 're-weave' the pages and it all goes to shit and page 4 and 8 end up facing each other.

I work on 3 magazines and they always go to pre-press in reader's spreads. I let their people set up the forms for press.

Sounds to me like they know you don't know so they're going to put it on you to cover their asses or have a laugh. If it prints wrong it's your fault not theirs.

Like Dusty said, "...maybe a better idea, send your document to a prepress shop and have them coordinate with the printer. " Especially if you're new to this sort of thing.

Increments of 4—unless it's perfect bound.

    Times infinity.

Depending on where your vendor they should be able to handle it for you. Is it in printer spreads or reader spreads?

you have to (hope I'm right) arrange the pages like this:

    12-1
    2-11
    3-10
    4-9
    8-5
    6-7

    Technically it'd be

    12 - 01
    02 - 11
    10 - 03
    04 - 09
    08 - 05
    06 - 07

If you were going to do it manually in InDesign. As others have said, this is not the ideal way. If you end up having to do it this way, it could be a good idea to make a mockup... fold a few sheets of paper, nest them, page through them one by one, numbering the pages, then fold them back out to see how the spreads lay out.
