better halftones

i havent reached 500 posts yet so i guess im still at noob status but i was hoping to get some help with halftones.

Ive searched the forums and im still not really understanding why photoshop halftones are bad. What would be a better way to make them? from scratch in illustrator? not asking anyone to devulge too much info about their technique, just looking for a good resource to learn more.

also there was a poster that had a lot of good halftone discussion in it about a month ago but i lost the link if anyone knows what im talking about.

we pretty much halftone everything through our RIP system.

i had 500 posts my first day, melia had 500 in her first 14 minutes here.

I make halftones in photoshop, by choosing Image > Mode > Bitmap > Halftone Screen > and then the settings of my choice.
I just like to see what they'll look like before printing. Plus I don't use a RIP, I send them (separations) out to a blueprint shop as PDFs.

i guess im looking to learn how to use them more in my designs, not really for prepress purposes

i would think there is some sort of plug in out there that can actually make a decent halftone.

try working at 1200 dpi, maybe that will produce a finer halftone.

ok, thats what i do, whats the problem with that, ive heard alot of crtiticism with doing it that way

it's a sloppy dot.

but if you are using huge dots, like 20lpi or someting it doesn;t really matter that much.

honestly, if you are happy with the results of the way you are doing it then fuck what everyone else thinks about psd halftones.
