are the top letters in a group? maybe direct select the letters that are messing up?

Dang, I've had this happen before too actually, and I don't remember how I fixed it. Let me think.
Is it 100% black, or have you selected a gray color swatch which would be 100% opacity of 40% gray or something like that?
First, I would do a select all, and just hit [command] + [shift] + ["G"] a bunch of times, to make damn sure nothing was grouped. Then I might even remove the compound path on the two "R"s there... wait, I bet that's it. I seem to recall when I had this problem that it was a compound path. RELEASE COMPOUND PATH, select each shape by itself using the solid select tool (that way you'll see if it is connected to something else). Set transparency.
When you convert type from text to objects, each letter is part of one large compound object that is the whole word.
Try that.
