I have owned both a Yamaha and a Lacie and they have both done a great job. The lacie is like 200-300 dollars.

Get one with Firewire, it's the only way to go, USB will just bog you down. (If your computer supports firewire) I have a LaCie and it screams and not an error yet.

You might consider spending a little extra and getting a DVD-R+/CD-RW so you can write the spectrum of optical media. You can put +4GB on a DVD and the prices have decreased considerably. Check to see what types of DVD media you need though. There is a big variety and not all types are compatible with various players.
