Default Metallic printing question

Hey, I got a job designing a cd cover with the request for metallic type for the title. I design in quark, for most of my cd covers, and have NO IDEA what to do, how to do it, anything!!! (of course I told the client, it can be done- since I KNOW it can be done) any suggestions? tips? prayers? any help is appreciated- (btw, the look is not a photoshop effect, it's actually metallic shiny type, as if foil were printed instead of ink) I owe you a six pack for this one, or maybe two. thanx

You just want like a spot metallic? Not a problem. There are PMS metallic swatches. Like in the 800s. Just make the metallic a spot color like you would any other sot color and you are set.

like richie said if you want metallic ink just spot a pms metallic... BUT quark doesnt have the PMS Metallic swatches in its library so you have to simulate the color using CMYK values in quark. make it a spot and then name it the PMS metallic # that you choose.

if they want foil you pretty much do the same thing but name the cmyk color "GOLD FOIL" or "SILVER FOIL"... make sure you note on a hard copy that there is a PMS spot metallic or foil VERY CLEARLY, like highlite it and shit.

you can pick a metallic swatch in quark. just make sure you got SPOT clicked.

also, you can just use any pms spot color for placement and let your printer know what metallic (or varnish even) you want printed where you have the spot color.

get it?

I just did a 3c 7" cover with one metallic spot, and called the printer to see if he had any special needs for setting up the job. I got the impression that overprinting is a bitch and he wanted a tiny trap or knockouts, so this is something you'll want to discuss with whoever is taking your files to film.

i think they have to hit it 2 or 3 times to overprint nicely... or hit it with a white and then a metallic. ive used them a bunch but never overprinted. foils cant really handle small text or small serifs etc. they just go to shit.
