Default Program questions...

I have been making posters for a little over 4 years now and all I have ever used has been the various releases of CorelDraw and Photoshop. I am presently using CorelDraw 10 and Photoshop 7 to do most of my work from layout to printing.

When I tell people I use CorelDraw, they usually retreat from me like I have some form of highly catchy disease and retord "Why don't you use Illustrator / Quark to do you work?"

I am very comfortable with the all the commands, all the functionality and all the quick keys of CorelDraw. I have had problems with printing companies being unable to print .cdr files (which is fine, just make .tff's), and I have had CorelDraw crash when attempting to use my works plotter to plot huge 36x56+ posters in the middle of the night.

Having never used really any other pogram, the question is what makes Illustrator and Quark "better"? (not to mention the wierd, dare I say freakish, aversion to CorelDraw).

Ya just answered yer own question.

Besides, Illustrator is an industry standard.

Quark just sucks.

Two words: SIZE and COMPATABILITY

Illustrator files are so much smaller than any raterized image (like photoshop). And the print nice and clean being native postscript files.

Corel has usually given my postscript printers problems. But then, I refuse to accept these types of files anymore, so... maybe they work ok now.

I ALWAYS output my Corel files as PDF. The new PDF engine in Coreldraw 11 is much improved. Coreldraw 10 has major issues with most everything. I used it but I wouldn't recommend that version to anybody. Corel really loused that version up. Corel 9 and 11 are rock solid. Still, using PDF's will definitely help with the ripping to plotters.

Pssst... using PDF's also hide the fact that you're using Corel. Print shops won't know the difference.

I received a quark file for some signs my company is producing. A friggin' QUARK file!?!?! I aksed if the designer could convert the text to outlines because I was having trouble opening the file. The response was, "Outlines? I don't think I can do that."
Designer... yeah right.
I had to reproduce the signs... all 32 of them.

Of course... Computer time is billed at time and a half. Roughly $75 an hour. I took my time too.

There is a huge difference between Production Artist and Graphic Designer... just cause it looks good on your screen asshole, don't mean it'll print.... We get that crap all the time here at the day job.

"But I sent you a layout!"
"You sent it in WORD!!!!"

Kinda like that....

So being industry standard is the only reason to use Illustrator?
