Default why analog is better

coz I just spent two hours drawing stoner
psychedelic style letters with the illustrator
pen tool coz I could do it on my lucnh break
at work (coudn't really lug the rubylith and
light table down here) and then stay after
and finish it up just now.

I hit "save" after every letter. I put about
two hours into this. It was looking good (very
surprisingly, though it took MUCH longer than
just slicing it out of lith). About 5 minutes ago
this message pops up.

"Illustrator has encountered a problem
and must close now. Sorry for the
inconcenience" I hit okay thinking "whatever.
I saved it all."

I restart illustrator and the file is no where
to be found. Not the copy on my
harddrive, not the back up copy saved on the
network...anywhere. The file is
permanently deleted from the entire
network. Both copies of it.

All fucking gone. Now I get to talk home
and spend another hour recutting it all
out of rubylith.

I'll never stray from the path again, analog
gods, forgive me for this transgression

I said it before and I'll say it again:
The revolution will not be digitized.

I'm actually with you guys on this! I love computers. I build them! But they are really in the hands of a lot of unconrtolable things that us as users cant really contrtol.

But I think thats why its cool as a lot of artists become more adaptive they can combine both the old sckool and new skool technologies(i.e. color seps from photo-whore w/traditional printin)

my op-onions

in the 10 years I have been doing computer graphics I have never once had a problem like you are encountering. It's a fluke beyond a fluke. one of he reasons why I have never had this problem is I use "save as" all the time and keep sucessive versions of the file....just in case something like that were to happen, which it never has, or in case I make a mistake that I cant repair, which has definetly happened. After your all done you just delete all of the uneeded copys. Easy as pie.

yeah we save versions of things for the graphics
we do for work, but since this was almost done
and was going smoothly... i dunno I didnt' think
to do it. ah well.

I just got Windows XP a few weeks back on my
machine and I think it still has some bugs in it.
Illo. 10 as well.

I save everything in different 'versions' from the initial scan on up. also like burn backups once in a while. never a fuck up unless I got lazy and did not follow protocol.

i dunno...a few months ago i got into freehand. i was all adobe for many, many years. for drawing though...freehand is the shit. it really is. so much more intuitive. my only bitch is having to load colors manually all the time. but thats probably my fault. there must be some preset i gotta tweak. check out freehand though for drawing or anything vector.

I am not a fan of XP. My sons have it on there machine and it's a hassle. I run Win 2000. No problems in 2 years.

I'm like a fanatic about backing up my drives. I'm affraid to get like a 30gig drive because it'll temp me to fill it up and not back it up. I figure if I stay with my 2 smaller drives it forces me to back my shit up regularly.
