    Default Bitmap texture effects Vs. actual screen output

    Hey, so I'm new here, as I mentioned in my last post. I'm just putting the finishing touches on my first poster to be screen printed. I won't be doing the printing, so this question is more from a design point of view.

    My design is in illustrator, but I like to roughen things up with texture—I find the easiest way is converting texture/photos into a bitmap in PS then bring it into Illustrator. This is useful as I can adjust the color within Illustrator.

    My question is, when I make the texture effects into bitmaps, do I need to consider the final output halftone settings? (angle and size)

    Part of my design uses some large halftones for effect, so I imagine that won't be an issue when outputting to a finer resolution, however some textures I want to be as fine as possible. Should I use the diffuse bitmap or halftone? Could a halftone bitmap end up with unwanted moire pattern if the final screen is printed with at a different angle to the texture?

    Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated.

    If your using a single layer of halftones as a texture most of the time you will be alright. There is always a VERY small chance moire can appear in the final print if your halftones are small enough and happen to conflict with the grain in the mesh on the screen(a good printer will notice in the first print and re burn your image at a slight angle on a new screen to get rid of it). But in most cases if you set your images angle slightly off(30, 65, 110) since most mesh fiber weave would run at about 0 or 90 (parallel to the screen frame), you can prevent it in the first place.... If your using multiple layers of halftones in an image, at the same dot size, set a different angle(such as any of the suggested ones earlier) so they don't interfere with the screen or each other.

    All of the angles and line screens should be numbers. You cannot enter a value like 2a-3c=1/y.

    For some images, I divide the line screens by zero to determine the screen angle.

    Thanks PedalPrinting! That's helpful to know.
    Would you recommend diffuse or halftone for bringing fine textures onto my design? Diffused bitmaps at 1200dpi use very small squares that I assume won't come out on the screen?! At a lower resolution would halftones look better?

    Any suggestions are appreciated! These forums are really inspiring. I need to start printing myself, as it seems I've still got a lot to learn as a designer!
