Fonel.cc is an interactive web-based application bridging the gap between font technology and image making. Developed by Stefan Huber of Signalwerk and Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher of Sonnenzimmer, the application allows users to design and share posters both digitally and physically using the interactive grid, Fonel character set, text and unique export and reproduction options.

Fonel.cc is an experiment in open source technology, design and social media that merges Sonnenzimmer’s print-based graphic explorations and Signalwerk’s multifaceted programming and typographic work. All work created with Fonel.cc falls under the CC SA license allowing users to create, share, and reproduce their poster designs in formats as varied as tweets, print outs and screen printed editions.

Fonel.cc offers a unique approach to creating and sharing. With Fonel.cc, participants can create custom digital messages for friends or produce limited edition custom screen printed posters for an upcoming event, all with the same interface.

True to it’s web-based nature, Fonel.cc is an evolving platform. The character set will be updated seasonally, with the next set launching Spring 2012.
Our hope with this project is to further the dialogue between the graphic arts, technology and their changing role in the communities in which they serve.

About the collaborators:
Stefan Huber
Stefan Huber, born 1981 (Switzerland). Attended to his first education in layout and typography in the late 90s. During four years he had the chance to learn Typography from the Zürich-School and was also involved with several book projects. Straight after, he started to study Typographic Design and graduated with national diploma. In the following years he was working for several Graphic Studios and started 2006 to study Type Design. Under the guidance of various national and international teachers he was able to sharpen his knowledge in typographic details and the formal shape of characters. He realized two fonts (Moline & Zintra) during his study and made for the «WZB – Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung» a Corporate Font based on Zintra. To learn from the past he made an apprenticeship in one of the oldest – and still in hot metal producing – printers (Offizin Haag-Drugulin) in Germany. In Leipzig (Germany) he worked together with electronic artists and begun to build sound and graphic machines. Stefan Huber founded 2006 his own company Signalwerk and he’s doing Graphic Design, Graphic Generation, Programming and Electronics. He lives and works at the moment mainly in Zürich (Switzerland).

Sonnenzimmer
Sonnenzimmer is a Chicago-based art and screen printing studio run by Nadine Nakanishi and Nick Butcher. The couple merges backgrounds in typography, printmaking, graphic design and fine art to create hand-crafted posters, books, music packaging and illustration. Working closely with Chicago’s bustling free jazz community, Sonnenzimmer has found a place where experimentation and abstraction are both respected are demanded. This freedom has allowed them to work through countless ideas and styles, shaping their visual language, one that is simultaneously quiet and bold. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with a recent exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and and upcoming exhibit in Thessaloniki, Greece. Their work has been published in books by Gestalten, Princeton Architectural Press, Juxtapoz, Pepin Press, and Rockport Publishers.

OK, maybe it's a cool web app, but it seems i'm to stupid for it.

Yeah, it has a learning curve definately. Know what you mean.

It's nice to see that open-source software is competing with all the commercial brands out there. In the end, it doesn't matter whether you used photoshop or a freeware to make your designs, because it will all boil down to personal creativity and resourcefulness. This is very interesting. A bit tricky to figure out, but interesting nonetheless.
